Tilley/Dionne; Wm/Tilley & Maude Bishop (Modeste Levesqu

Post by Jim Belanger »

Seeking confirmation data on William Henry Tilley aka Guillaume Dionne, son of Elie Dionne and Helene Lagace. William married Modeste Levesque aka Maude Bishop of Frenchville. I cannot find a marriage date or place. William was born 11 Dec 1862 in Fort Kent and died 5 July 1948 in Sherman Mills. Maude was born 9 Feb 1860 (maybe in Frenchville) and died 1919 (unknown where) and she was the daughter of Germain Levesque and Nathalie Cyr. Would like to know why Elie Dionne changed his name to William Tilley. I found this in the St Francois NB register. Le 10 novembre j'ai baptise William; Elie Dionne; Elaine Lagasse; Vital Belanger; Philomene Lagasse; Chs. Sweron." Father Dionne was related to William and may have married him and Modeste but I can't find his last parish.

Jim,
I don't think that your Modeste/Maude is the daughter of Germain and Nathalie Cyr.

Here's the page Germain, Nathalie, and their children (or at least some of them) on this website: http://www.upperstjohn.com/dionne/d8986.htm

As you can see if you follow the links, Germain Levesque was the nephew of Father Henri Dionne. In fact, Germain had a close relationship with his uncle.

Father Dionne was pastor at Ste Luce Church in Frenchville until early 1860, and died in March 1861, so he definitely did not marry William. For detailed information on Father Dionne go here: http://www.upperstjohn.com/dionne/d9155.htm

Here is Germain and Nathalie's family in the 1860 census: http://www.upperstjohn.com/1860/T18R5-1 ... erelevique
You can see there is a "Mary" who is one year old.

Here's the same family in the 1870 census, living in "Dickeyville" (Frenchville):

12 | 40 41 | Leveque Jeremiah | 42 M W | Farmer | 1000 525 | Canada | X X | | | X |
13 | 40 41 | Leveque Tallie | 37 F W | Keeping House | | Maine | | X
14 | 40 41 | Leveque Ferdinand | 14 M W | | | Maine | X | X
15 | 40 41 | Leveque Edith | 13 F W | | | Maine | X | X
16 | 40 41 | Leveque Mary | 11 F W | | | Maine | X | X
17 | 40 41 | Leveque Verginia | 9 F W | | | Maine | X | X
18 | 40 41 | Leveque Jeremiah | 8 M W | | | Maine | X | X
19 | 40 41 | Leveque Damas | 5 M W | | | Maine | X | X
20 | 40 41 | Leveque Denis | 3 M W | | | Maine | X
21 | 40 41 | Leveque Henry | 2 M W | | | Maine | X
22 | 40 41 | Leveque Catharine | 1/12 F W | | | Maine | X Apr

You can see that in this census, as in 1860, there is a "Mary" who was born in 1859.

Looking in the baptismal record, this is the child listed as "Mary Beatrix", baptized 10 July 1859: http://upperstjohn.com/steluce/baptisms ... hp?id=2448

But I think this is the marriage record for her:

LEVESQUE, MARIE fille de Germain et Nathalie Cyr - 1854
ALBERT, FRANCOIS fils de Victori et Hermine Michaud - 1855
maries a Ste Luce Frenchville, ME - 1881-01-10

So this is unlikely to be your Modeste.

There is, however, a Modeste Leveque baptized on 10 February 1860, having been born on the 9th, at St. François church, by Father Sweron.

As you can see, she's the daughter of Beloni Levesque and Sophie Dubé. Here's their marriage info:
LEVESQUE, BENONI fils de Benoni et Sophie Raymond - 1827
DUBE, SOPHIE fille de Abraham et Modeste Saucier - 1829
maries a Ste Luce Frenchville, ME - 1858-01-18

For all of the details, go here: http://www.upperstjohn.com/steluce/marr ... php?id=365
So this is the trail to try to follow up on.

Benoni and Sophie show up in the 1861 New Brunswick census in Madawaska (p.2):

Belonie Leveque, 30
Sophie Leveque, wife, 20
Theophilus Leveque, son, 3
Modest Leveque, daughter, 1½

As for Elie Dionne, I don't see him directly related to Henri Dionne. Here's the record of his marriage:

DIONNE, ELIE fils de Jean et Rose Dube - 1829
LAGACE, HELENE fille de Joseph et Priscille Gagnon - 1828
maries a Ste Luce Frenchville, ME - 1853-10-03
Here's the details from the Ste Luce parish register: http://upperstjohn.com/steluce/marriage ... php?id=241

Here is the info on Elie's parents:
DIONNE, JEAN BAPTISTE fils de Charles et Felicite Gagnon - 1793
DUBE, MARIE ROSE fille de Prosper et M Catherine Leclerc-Francoeur - 1800
maries a Kamouraska, PQ - 1829-10-20

Henri Dionne's parents were Antoine Dionne and Salomée Miville Deschenes, and his grandfather was Benjamin Dionne. Dionne's a pretty common last name.

I hope this is somewhat helpful.
