St. Joseph's in Wallagrass: history?

Post by ChipG »

In the Ste Luce church records, from about 1858, some people are identified as being from "St. Joseph". These are people who in the 1860 census are living in what's now Wallagrass, Eagle Lake, part of the town of Fort Kent.

The actual church and parish of St. Joseph in Wallagrass wasn't established until 1890. Does anyone know the history of St.Joseph's? Was it established as a chapel or mission of Ste Luce in the 1850s?

Any info on the history of this parish would be greatly appreciated!

Did you look into this on your recent visit to the Valley, Chip? I've been wondering what kind of records this parish might have and have never seen them made available thus far....

Best,
Nessa

No, I didn't get a chance to do that this time. I also contacted the parish itself and they didn't know anything about this history either.
