Sylvestre Ouellette & Marguerite Dubé

Post by ChipG »

Here's the marriage record of this couple:

OUELLETTE, SYLVAIN fils de Germain et Sophie Poirier -
DUBE, MARGUERITE fille de Joseph et Marguerite Cyr - 1825
maries a Van Buren, ME - 1858-06-28

Here is Margaret Dubé in the 1851 census with her father and stepmother (her mom had died). You can see she's 9, which means she was born about 1842. They are living in Andover Parish, in the "French Settlement", which I believe is across the river from Van Buren.
http://www.upperstjohn.com/1851/andov14.htm#25, lines 23-31

23 | 211 | Joseph Dubey | M | H | 45 | French | Labourer | Birth
24 | 211 | Celeste Dubey | F | W | 28 | Canadian | | 1844
25 | 211 | Dennis Dubey | M | S | 3 | Native | | Birth
26 | 211 | Thomas Dubey | M | S | 1 | Native | | Birth
27 | 211 | Isadore Dubey | M | S.S. | 23 | Native | | Birth
28 | 211 | Elizabeth Dubey | F | S.D. | 18 | Native | | Birth
29 | 211 | Mary Dubey | F | S.D. | 13 | Native | | Birth
30 | 211 | Margaret Dubey | F | S.D. | 9 | Native | | Birth
31 | 211 | Abraham Dubey | M | S.S. | 8 | Native | | Birth

Marguerite is listed as "stepdaughter", though she's actually the stepdaughter of Celeste, Joseph's second wife; from the ages of the kids, it seems that Joseph and Celeste were married in about 1847 or so, and Margaret's mother, Marguerite Cyr, died sometime after 1843.

This family also shows up in the 1861 NB census, living in Grand Falls, p.5 (not online). You can see by names and ages that this is the same family:

Joseph Dubay, head of household, 58 yrs old, Canadian (b. in Quebec), farmer
Selastavate Dubay, wife, 41
Denis, son, 15
Thomas, son, 11
Edward, son, 9
Elizabeth, daughter, 7
Marthe, daughter, 5
Joseph, son, 4
WIlliam, son, 2
Austine, son, 1

And living either right next door or in the same household is:

Sylvestre Willet, head of household, 33 yrs old, "natif", "bucheron" (lumberjack)
Marget Willet, wife, 20 yrs old, "native"
Marget Willet, daughter, 2 yrs old

So this is pretty definitive evidence that your Sylvestre Ouellette and his wife Marguerite are indeed the couple listed above.

You can therefore follow Marguerite's line back, since it's recorded. Here's info on her parents' marriage:

DUBE, JOSEPH fils de Germain et Marguerite Roy-Denys - 1806
CYR, MARGUERITE fille de Hilarion et Charlotte Tardif - 1795
maries a St Basile, NB - 1825-11-02

And it's very probable that Joseph Dubé shows up in the 1833 census (as Joseph DeBay) here: http://www.upperstjohn.com/1833/mad6.htm#6 , go down to line 38.
