Christophe Marquis

Post by ChipG »

A visitor asked me if I could find information on Christophe Marquis:
I have a document with me stating that a Christopher Marquis of Hancock Plantation, in said County Yeoman , was one of three men who signed a deed, along with John Garet (Gueret) Madawaska Plantation, county of Aroostook and Hilaire Cyr of Madawaska Plantation, county of Carleton. All three of these men were Trustees of the Church of Ste-Luce, Frenchville, Maine. Signed December 16, 1847. I'm almost certain that this Christopher came from Kamouraska PQ. probably moved in the Clair or Fort Kent area? I've hit a brick wall, is there a possibility that you could help me or direct me to the right source.
Here's the info I found.

This Christophe Marquis was married to Reine Boucher; at her burial at Ste Luce he's listed as the widower. But in the marriage records of the valley and of Kamouraska, there's no such marriage listed.

Turns out Christophe is listed as Thomas Marquis in the marriage record at St. Basile:
Thomas Marquis, son of Paul & Madeleine Desjardins, married to Reine Rose Boucher, widow of Michel Pelletier, m. St Basile 12 Feb 1821.
Evidence that Christophe and Thomas are the same person:

In the 1831 Deane and Kavanagh land survey of the upper St.John, on the south bank, "Michael Pelletier" is listed as an owner who'd moved onto that land in 1812. After his name is this note: "Died 1816 leaving 5 children; widow married Christophe Marquis; land now owned by daughters Desanges (who married Pierre Marquis); and Locade (m. Desire Nadeau)"

Christophe is listed with an older wife in the 1830 and 1840 censuses:

1840: http://www.upperstjohn.com/1840/madawaska-s.htm#99 on line 12

The couple also is in the 1850 census in Hancock Plantation:

Post by YankieCajun »

For the ancestors of Thomas / Christophe Marquis see the information in my genealogy database for Thomas Marquis http://www.royandboucher.com/genealogy/ ... tree=T0001 and for Reine Boucher http://www.royandboucher.com/genealogy/ ... tree=T0001 who was baptized on 7 Dec 1779 at St Louis of Kamouraska, Quebec and is therefore a few years younger than indicated in her burial record and in the census.
