1829 list of Madawaska "sufferers" / bad harvest

Post by ChipG »

In the late 1820s the Madawaska Settlement suffered poor harvests. As a result, by the summer of 1829 parts of the population were facing starvation.

The New Brunswick provincial government sent Thomas Baillie, Surveyor General, to the settlement where he found a dire situation. He had a list drawn up in August 1829 documenting those households who were in need, the number of members of each household, and the amount (in bushels) of corn provided to each of them. The document is in the New Brunswick Provincial Archives.

I have transcribed the list and provided background information.

Check out the 1829 "List of the Sufferers in the Madawaska Settlement" !

And thanks to Norm DeMerchant for pointing me in the direction of the online database of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly.
