John McCurdy McConaughy and Mary N. Porter


60. John McCurdy McCONAUGHY was born on 11 Mar 1814 in Twolick Creek, Indiana Co., Penn. He received a medical degree in 1850 from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa.. (61)

In 1850 he was granted two parcels of land in Ogle County, Illinois, by the US government, 160 acres each, the first on 12 July 1850 (Ogle Co., section 11, section part SW, township 41N, range 02E, meridian 3); and the second on 23 September 1850 (Ogle Co., section 11, section part NW, township 41N, range 02E, meridian 3). Although described as sold by district US general land office in Illinois, the price for both parcels of land is listed as 0.0.(195)

He appeared on the 1850 US census in Lawrenceville, Allegheny Cnty, Penn., as John McConaghy, 35, physician, owning real estate with a value of $800, born in Pennsylvania, living in a household with Mary and children Emma J. (5) and James R. (4). (196)

After finishing medical school he and his family moved to Lindenwood, Illinois, which was still wild country on the edge of a vast forest, where he practiced medicine until 1853. They then moved to Rochelle in Ogle County, Illinois.(61)  There he eventually gave up medical practice and went into the grain business.

He was on the committee appointed by the Presbytery of Chicago to organize the Presbyterian church in Rochelle, which was done in September 1854. He was also a Presbyterian minister in Kentucky, and held pastorates for 6 years in Kentucky until compelled to give up the ministry because of serious throat trouble. (61)

He died on 10 Nov 1869 in Rochelle, Illinois, of "typhic pneumonia.".(61)

He was married to Mary Neal PORTER on 22 May 1844.(61)

61. Mary Neal PORTER was born on 26 Mar 1817 in Pittsburgh, Penn..(61) She appeared on the 1850 US census in Lawrenceville, Allegheny Cnty, Penn., as Mary M. McConaghy, 33, "wife", born in Pennsylvania, living in household with husband John and children Emma J. (5) and James R. (4). (197) She died on 23 Jan 1903 in Rochelle, Illinois. (61)

child iii. William Porter McCONAUGHY died at a young age. He was buried in Pittsburgh, Penn., in the "large but nearly filled Porter cemetery lot." (62)
