44. Nyzaire (Isaie) ST.JEAN was born on 15 Nov 1840 in Canada. (From tombstone inscription, St. Francis Catholic cemetary, St. Francis, Maine.) He appeared on the census in 1870 in Allagash (on upper St. John above St. Francis), Maine. (141) Listed as Nazaire St. John, age 34, born in Maine, living with wife Christie (31) and children Sophia (10) and Christie (7). He appeared on the census in 1880 in Township 17, Range 11, Aroostook, Maine. (142) Listed as Nazaire St. John, age 36, farmer, couldn't read or write, born in Canada; living with wife Christa, 31 and children Ester, 16, Sophia, 14, George, 12, Nazaire, 11, Christine, 9, Louis, 7, and John, 3. He died on 28 Feb 1883. (From tombstone inscription, at St. Francis Catholic cemetary, St. Francis, Maine: "Nizaire St.Jean, le 15 november 1840, le 28 février 1883".) He was buried in Mar 1883 in St. Francis Catholic cemetery, St. Francis, Maine. (Discrepancy between 1870 and 1880 censuses on children; 1870 lists Sophia, age 10, and Christie, age 7; 1880 lists Ester, age 16, Sophia, age 14, George age 12, Nazaire age 11, and Christine age 9 (plus two younger than 10). It is unlikely that Sophia who is ten in 1870 is the same person as Sophia who is 14 in 1880; or that Christie age 7 in 1870 is same person as Christine age 9; also, not clear where were Ester, George and Nazaire, all listed as born before 1870 but not on 1870 census?) "Like his dad, T.A. had to learn to be independent from a young age. He
was the youngest of six kids, and life was tough in the Allagash. Isaie died
when T.A. was 11-12 years old. None of his older siblings could take him in when
Christine remarried a man named Hunter in 1890, and apparently left. T.A. was
on his own!! He was raised by the Cunliff family. He worked in the lumber camps
from an early age, working as a cook's asistant and working the spring log drives
from the top of the Allagash down the Penobscot River, or down the Allagash to
the St.John?
"He came to Fort Kent at the age of about 19 and enrolled in the Madawaska
Training
School, apparently intending to be a teacher. Something must have happened to
derail that dream, for he never finished that program. He married Clara in 1901
and settled in life as a potato farmer, general store owner, and lumber buyer.
His estrangement from most of his family must have been tough, even at his wedding
his witness was not a St.John but a friend name John Sweeney. For years thereafter,
there was very little socializing between our family and most of the other St.Johns
(we only ever visited Nellie and Kitty)."
