Visits to the Upper St.John River Valley
Over the course of the 19th century numerous travellers visited the upper St.John
Valley. Visitors included soldiers, missionaries, lumbermen, anglers, and economic
boosters. Many of these travellers wrote and published descriptions of
their visits. I've reproduced here a number of those published descriptions
- 1686 - The Bishop of Quebec
Monseigneur de Saint-Vallier (Jean-Baptiste de La Croix de Chevrières
de Saint-Vallier) goes through the upper St.John River valley on his way to
Acadia, May 1686
- 1790 - Park Holland, visit
to the St.John and Madawaska Settlement
- 1813 - The 104th New Brunswick Regiment
goes on foot from Fredericton to Quebec via the upper St.John River valley,
by John LeCouteur , March 1815
- 1815 - Sir George Head, an Assistant
Commissary General in the British Army, visits the Madawaska Settlement on
his way from Halifax to Canada, January 1815 -- transcribed and submitted
by Gary Campbell.
- 1820 - Major Joseph Treat -
Commissioned by Maine governor to survey disputed northeast boundary of the
new state of Maine - transcribed and submitted by Gary Campbell.
- 1826 - New Brunswick Courier on "St
Johns Settlement," February 1826
- 1829 - The Gleaner and Northumberland
Schediasma on the situation in the Madawaska Settlement, July
1829
- 1831 - Deane and Kavanagh's
impressions of the Madawaska Settlement Part of a report on landholdings
in the valley undertaken for the State of Maine by John Deane and Edward Kavanagh,
July-August 1831
- 1836 - Report of geologist Charles T.Jackson
on public lands in Maine The Tobique, Grand Falls, and the upper
St.John River valley, including Madawaska Settlement, October 1836
- 1837 - Report of geologist James T. Hodge on
the public lands in Maine The Allagash, St.John, St.Francis, Madawaska,
and Tobique Rivers, and the St.Lawrence at Rivière-du-Loup, July-August
1837
- 1838 - Visit of William T. Baird to Madawaska
A vacation in Madawaska for this Fredericton young man
- 1841 - Moses Perley surveys the Maliseet
(Wulustukieg) population of the St.John River valley The Commissioner
of Indians of New Brunswick visits native settlements in the valley, August
1841
- 1858 - "Editors' excursion" to the
French Settlements at Madawaska, by Edward Elwell. A group of newspaper
editors were brought to northern Aroostook in an attempt to induce people
to settle in the northern part of the State of Maine
- 1863 - "Aroostook and Madawaska",
by Charles Hallock. A visit in the summer of 1863 to Weston, Houlton, Presque
Isle, Grand Falls, and Madawaska
