Nyzaire St.Jean and Christine Ouellette

(44.) 4. Nyzaire (Isaie) ST.JEAN was born on 15 Nov 1840 in Canada. (From tombstone inscription, St. Francis Catholic cemetery, St. Francis, Maine.) Sometime before 1861 he moved to the upper St.John River valley, settling along the St.John upstream in the Castonia Settlement. (Although the exact date is unknown, it seems likely that it was after the summer of 1860, because Nyzaire does not show up in the 1860 US census.) Also living in the Casonia Settlement was the family of Amable Ouellette and Esther Gardner, including their daughter Christine.

Nyzaire ST.JEAN was married to Christine OUELLETTE (daughter of Amable OUELLETTE and Esther GARDNER) on 8 Jul 1861 in Frenchville, Maine.(7)

(45.) Christine (Christy) OUELLETTE was born on 23 Feb 1840 in Canada. (1850 US Census gives age as 10, 1860 says 21; tombstone inscription at St. Francis Catholic cemetery gives birth date 26 February 1839.) She was baptized on 3 Mar 1840 in St-Patrice church, Rivière-du-Loup, Québec. Her godparents were Louis Fontaine and Marianne Pinet [source: Church register of St Patrice de Rivière du Loup]. Sometime around 1845 she moved with her parents to the upper St.John River valley, by 1860 settling in the Castonia Settlement. She appeared on the 1850 US census in Township 17, Range 9, Aroostook, Maine, as Christie Willet, age 10, born in Canada, living in parents' household (Amat and Esther).(9) She appeared on the 1860 US census in Township 12, Range 16, Aroostook, Maine, as Christine Ouillett, age 21, living in parents' household (Amable and Esther).(10)

Nyzaire and Christine appeared on the 1870 US census in Allagash (on upper St. John above St. Francis), Maine, as Nazaire St. John, age 34, born in Maine, and Christie St. John, age 31, born in Maine, with children Sophia (10) and Christie (7). (5) They appeared on the 1880 US census in Township 17, Range 11, Aroostook, Maine, as Nazaire St. John, age 36, farmer, couldn't read or write, born in Canada; and Christa St. John, age 31, born in Maine, with children Ester, 16, Sophia, 14, George, 12, Nazaire, 11, Christine, 9, Louis, 7, and John, 3. (6) (Discrepancy between 1870 and 1880 censuses on children; 1870 lists Sophia, age 10, and Christie, age 7; 1880 lists Ester, age 16, Sophia, age 14, George age 12, Nazaire age 11, and Christine age 9 (plus two younger than 10). It is unlikely that Sophia who is ten in 1870 is the same person as Sophia who is 14 in 1880; or that Christie age 7 in 1870 is same person as Christine age 9; also, not clear where were Ester, George and Nazaire, all listed as born before 1870 but not on 1870 census?)

Nyzaire (Isaie) ST.JEAN and Christine OUELLETTE had the following children:

child+9 i. Esther ST.JOHN.
child10 ii. Sophia ST.JOHN was born about 1866 in Maine. (13) She appeared on the 1880 US census in Township 17, Range 11, Aroostook, Maine, age 14, living with her parents (Nazaire and Christa St. John).(14)
child(22.) +11 iii. George ST.JOHN.
child12 iv. Nazaire ST.JOHN was born about 1869 in Maine. (13) He appeared on the 1880 US census in Township 17, Range 11, Aroostook, Maine, as age 11, living in parents' household (Nazaire and Christa St. John).(15)
child+13 v. Christine ST.JOHN.
child+14 vi. Louis ST.JOHN.
child+15 vii. Théodule Alphonse (T.A.) ST.JOHN.

Nyzaire ST.JEAN died on 28 Feb 1883, at the age of 42. (From tombstone inscription, at St. Charles Catholic cemetery, St. Francis, Maine: "Nizaire St.Jean, le 15 november 1840, le 28 février 1883".) He was buried in Mar 1883 in St. Charles Catholic cemetery, St. Francis, Maine.

Christine OUELLETTE was married to Jim HUNTER on 9 Jul 1889 in St. Charles, St. Francis, Maine. (37) (Répertoire lists date of 1989.) Jim HUNTER was born about 1836. (Based on tombstone inscription, which gives age at time of death in 1908 as 71.) He died on 24 Sep 1908. He was buried about 25 Sep 1908 in St. Francis Protestant cemetery, St. Francis, Maine. Tombstone inscription reads: "James Hunter died 24 Sept 1908, age 71 yrs. Gone but not forgotten."

Christine Ouellette appeared in the 1910 US census in Township 14, Range 14 (very far up the St John or the Black River) as Christina Hunter, age 69, widow, had given birth to 6 children all of whom were alive, came to the US in 1856, had her own income; living in the household of her son Louis and his wife and children. Also in the household was her son-in-law John Camel (Campbell), widower of her daughter Christine, and her grandson Theodule Camel (Campbell), age 10.

Christine OUELLETTE died on 22 Apr 1918. (From tombstone inscription, St. Francis Catholic cemetary, St. Francis, Maine, buried next to first husband Nyzaire St.Jean: "Christie Ouellette son épouse, le 26 février 1839, le 22 avril 1918".) She was buried in St. Charles Catholic cemetery, St. Francis, Maine.
