Michel Gagnon & Marie Anne Thibodeau

2. Michel GAGNON was born on 12 Dec 1814 and baptized the following day in St. Louis church, Kamouraska, Québec. His godfather was Michel Gagnon and his godmother was Claire Morin.

He moved from Kamouraska to the Madawaska region with his parents, brothers and sisters in about the summer of 1831, at the age of 16.

At the time of the 1840 US census, he was probably living in the household of his father-in-law Michel Thibodeau, along with his wife Marie-Anne Thibodeau and their son Isaïe, in Madawaska North of the St.John River (p.47, line 11). In January 1845, their daughter Modeste was baptized at Ste Luce church and they were described as "of this parish"; at the end of that year they were at Ste Lucechurch as godparents. So it seems possible that they were living in Ste Luce parish.

By 1850 however the family had moved downriver. They appeared on the 1850 US Census in Van Buren Plantation, Maine, as Michael Gormie, 37 years old, laborer, born in Canada, could not read or write, living in household with wife Nancy (31), children Zayer (10), Clorice (8), Modest (5), Rose (4), Sophia (8 months), and Lewis Gormie (35) "laborer".(3)

He appeared on 1860 US Census in Township K, Range 2, Aroostook Cnty, Maine, as Mitchell Gonyou, age 46, farmer, real estate valued at $100, personal estate $40, born in Upper Canada, couldn't read or write, living with wife Mary A. (41) and children Ezekel (20), Modeste (15), Sophia (11), Mitchell (9), Anthony (7), Thomas (5), Ezeta (3), and Laura (1). (4)

He appeared on the 1870 US census in Township K, Range 2, Aroostook Cnty, Maine, as Michael Gonier, age 56, farmer, real estate worth $200, personal estate worth $150, born in Canada, both parents of foreign birth, couldn't read or write, citizen of US, living in household with wife Mary Ann (47) and children Mitchell (19), Anthony (17), Thomas (15), (?-illegible) daughter (13), Laura (12), Maggie (10) and Vetal (8). (5)

He appeared on the 1880 US census in K Plantation, Aroostook Cnty, Maine, as Mitchel Gagnon ("fils" is added in after the name), 68, farmer, couldn't read or write, born in Canada, parents born in Canada, living in household with wife Marie (60) and children Zelia (23), Laura (21), Margaurette (19), Vetal (18), next door to "Mitchell Gagnon, Jr." and his family.(6)

Michel GAGNON was married to Marie Anne THIBODEAU (daughter of Michel THIBODEAU and Marguerite CYR) on 25 Nov 1839 in St-Basile, New Brunswick.(7)

Marie Anne THIBODEAU was born about 1823 in New Brunswick. (8) She appeared on the 1850 US Census (listed as Nancy Gormie), and on the 1860 US Census (as Mary A. Gonyou). She appeared on the 1870 US census in Township K, Range 2, Aroostook Cnty, Maine, as Mary Ann Gonier, 47, keeping house, born in New Brunswick, both parents of foreign birth, could not read or write, living with husband Michael and children Mitchell, Anthony, Thomas, (? illegible daughter's name), Laura, Maggie and Vetal.(9) She appeared on the 1880 US census in K Plantation, Aroostook Cnty, Maine, as Marie Gagnon, 60, at home, couldn't read or write, born in Maine, parents born in Maine, living with husband Mitchel and children Zelia, Laura, Margaurette and Vetal.
