240. James McCONAUGHY was born about 1747 in Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland. He immigrated about 1750 to Path Valley, Cumberland Co., Pa.. (Came with his parents.) He served in the military from 1777 in the Revolutionary War. (463) He was a sergeant in the 1st battalion of Cumberland County Militia, Col. James Dunlap commanding, in the company of Capt. Noah Abraham of Path Valley. He continued to serve in the militia after the war, and is listed as a captain in 1792. He was a farmer from 1778 to 1828. (464) In 1779 he was taxed on 2 horses and 3 cattle; in 1780 on 2 horses and 2 cattle; and in 1781 and 1782 on 160 acres, 3 horses and 4 cattle. His farm in 1790 adjoined the village of Fannettsburg, and was 12 miles from Louden on the Philadelphia turnpike. He appeared on the census in 1790 in Fannett Twp., Franklin Co., Penn.. (He was listed as head of a household that also included 2 males over 16, 6 males under 16, and 2 females.) He died about 1828 in Twolick Creek, Center Twp., Indiana Co., Penn.. He was buried about 1828 in Bethel Church, Aultman, Indiana Co., Penn.. He was married to Isabella McCONNELL in 1778 in Path Valley, Cumberland Co., Pa..(61)

241. Isabella McCONNELL died about 1825. She was buried about 1825 in Bethel Church, Aultman, Centre Twp., Indiana Co., Penn.. She was a "daughter of the McConnell family in Path Valley." Children were:

child i. David McCONAUGHY was born on 13 Nov 1779 in Fannettsburg, Path Valley, Cumberland Co., Penn.. He died on 14 Feb 1847 in Bethel Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. He served in the military. He was called to serve in the militia during the War of 1812, but because he did not want to leave his wife and small children alone in the forest where they lived, he got his brother Robert, who was visiting him, to go out as his substitute. He married Anna GRIMES of Montgomery County, Ohio. They had 12 children, including: Francis (a carpenter who served with the Union army and was killed at the siege of Vicksburg); James G. (b. 3 Jul 1823, married Elizabeth Keplinger 1 Apr 1852, had 13 children, died after 1886); David (b. 23 Apr 1827, married Rachel Ten Eick, had four children, died after 1886); and Thomas.

child iii. James McCONAUGHY was born in Path Valley, Franklin Co., Pa.. He was a farmer. (465) He was taxed on 300 acres in 1780. He married Margaret FINDLEY, and had 7 children, of whom 3 sons died in infancy.
child iv. Franklin McCONAUGHY died. Died at the age of 21 of yellow fever in Natchez, where he is buried. He and his brother David had started down the Mississippi with produce, hoping to sell it in New Orleans, but Franklin made it only to Natchez.
child v. Robert McCONAUGHY was born on 8 Jun 1789 in Path Valley, Franklin Co., Pa.. He died before 1880 in Centre Twp., Indiana Co., Penn.. He married Anna JAMISON in about 1815 or 1816; they had 11 children, of whom 2 sons died in infancy. Those who survived: Eliza (married James Graham); Isabella (never married); Martha A. (married Rev. Joseph Shaw, had one daughter); Mary Jane (married William Roadman); Rachel (married Dr. J.W. Blackburn and had one daughter); James H. (married Mary Brant, served in Union Army); Robert Jamison (married Anna K. Beamer, had 7 children); John C. (married Elizabeth Brant); and Frank (served in Union Army, wounded at 2nd Battle of Bull Run, died on battle field).
