He was baptized on 25 Mar 1854 in Ste-Luce, Frenchville, Maine.⁽⁷⁾ His godparents were Germaine Levesque and Prescille Oullette; baptized by Fr. Dionne. He appeared in the 1870 US census as Xavier Tardy, age 17 (the census taker appears to have mixed up Louis and his younger brothers Hypolite and François-Xavier). He appeared on 1880 US census in Frenchville, Maine, as age 25, single, working on farm, couldn't read or write, born in Maine, living with parents Louis and Sophia.⁽¹⁴⁾

He was married to Henriette DUBÉ (daughter of Gabriel DUBÉ and Mathilde OUELLETTE) on 10 Oct 1881 in Ste-Luce church, Frenchville, Maine. ⁽¹⁵⁾ Louis TARDIF and Henriette DUBÉ had the following children:
