This is what today's townships were called in the 1850 US Census of Aroostook County. To see what the 1850 townships are called today, click here. If you can help me out with information on the current names of any of the other places, or if you have any more specific information or corrections, please Thanks.
Please note that there is not an exact correspondence between the borders of the townships and the areas that the census taker canvassed under the heading of a specific township. Some people who lived in one township show up in another, neighboring one in the census.
Allagash Plantation: part of Number 17, Range 9 Amity: Amity Ashland: Number 11, Range 5; Number 12, Range 5 Bancroft: Bancroft Benedicta: Benedicta Plantation Blaine: Letter B, Range 1 Bridgewater: Bridgewater Academy Grant; Portland Academy Grant Caribou: Eaton Grant; Letter H, Range 2 Cary Plantation: Number 11 Township Castle Hill: Not incorporated until 1903, settlers in what is now Castle Hill are found in these townships in the 1850 census: Number 12, Range 3; Number 12, Range 5; Number 11, Range 5 Caswell: Letter F Township Crystal: Crystal Plantation Cyr Plantation: part of Van Buren Plantation (this township continues over three web pages) Dyer Brook Eagle Lake: Based on the families in Eagle Lake (T.16, R.7) in the 1860 census, I believe that the returns for Eagle Lake are not included in the 1850 census; if there are any families who were living in T.16, R.7 and are included, they would be in part of Hancock Plantation (this township continues over two web pages). I have not yet identified any such families however, and believe that the census taker may have skipped T.16, R.7 in 1850. Eaton: (as Township 11, Range 1): Number 11 Forkstown: Number 3, Range 2 Fort Fairfield: Plymouth Grant; Letter D, Range 1 Fort Kent: part of Hancock Plantation (this township continues over two web pages).
