Note: Madawaska
Plantation's population was made up mostly of French-speakers.
The census taker seemed not to be familiar with French or French
names. Thus very few of the names are spelled correctly, most
are a very rough approximation of what the name sounded like to
an English speaker who did not know French. For example, Gagnon
is written Gormeo. In the annotations, or in the remarks (in parentheses),
I have noted the actual spelling for those individuals for whom
I have specific information; or I have included the information
