Census transcriptions:

Aroostook County, Maine, 1850 US Census

Transcriptions of the 1850 US Census of Aroostook County, Maine by township names and page numbers (Microfilm Roll #M432-248)

These pages are transcriptions of the 1850 US Census of Aroostook County, Maine. This was the Seventh Census taken by the United States, and the fourth one of this region of Maine. The 1850 census was the first US census to list the names of each individual in the household (earlier ones had listed only the heads of household). Additional information gathered in this census includes age, sex, race, occupation (for males over the age of 15), the value of real estate owned by the head of household, and birthplace. Also included was whether a couple was married within the previous year (information on this was not very consistently gathered in Aroostook county); whether the person had attended school in the previous year; whether the person could not read and write; and whether the person was "deaf & dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper, or convict." For more information on this census, see Instructions given to the census takers by the US Bureau of the Census, and the Analysis by the census bureau of the 1850 Census after its completion.

This transcription lists the names and other information as the census taker wrote them. Some of the names (especially the French ones) were not taken down correctly by the enumerator, but the census transcription project's goal is an exact copy of what was written. Only information in the space after "Remarks" is not transcribed from the census (rather, it explains or gives further information). Likewise, the annotations that appear in popup boxes are not from the original census.

In the transcription of the townships in the northern Aroostook census district, I have included in each page heading, after the census taker's name under "Reference", links to online images of the original census returns located on this website. The equipment I used to scan these pages often could not cover the entire page, so on some pages the very edges are not clear. In all cases, though, the names and other information are there. As you will see, on some pages the quality of the original microfilm is not great, and the handwriting is difficult to read. The images are rather large, and may take a minute or so to load.

One note: on the "Value of real estate" column, the census taker only entered a figure if the value of the property was $300 or more. For farms assessed at less than $300 this column was left blank.

For clues on the French names that are misspelled, see my page on French names in the 1850 census of Aroostook County. For a few people for whom I have specific information, for example the "correct" spelling of the name, maiden name, etc., I have put that information into the "Remarks" space (in parentheses), or I have put that information into popup boxes that show up when you put the cursor over their name. For more information see my page on Annotations.

If you have information about someone in the census--correct name spelling, maiden name, etc.--let me know and I'll add it.

Here's a page explaining abbreviations and place names used by the census takers.

I am also putting links into these pages. If there is a page elsewhere with info on an individual, I will put a link from the census transcription page to that page. If you'd like me to link anyone, please let me know the page address.

Most of these transcriptions were originally done by Carol J. Glidden (Thanks Carol!!). I have proofread them against the original census, made corrections, and input them into the US GenWeb Census Project software CART, which produced html pages. I then formatted them into the pages here.
