Antoine Gagnon and Philomène Marquis

15. Antoine GAGNON (32) was born on 17 Dec 1844 in Frenchville, Maine. He was baptized on 18 Dec 1844 in Ste-Luce church, Frenchville, Maine. His godparents were Henri Dionne and Salomee Miville Deschenes, his maternal uncle and maternal grandmother, and he was baptized by his godfather, Fr. Henri Dionne, who noted that the godmother did not know how to sign her name. (64) Antoine was not included in the 1850 US census; he is not listed with his parents and siblings, and was apparently missed by the census taker (his family appears in Madawaska Pltn., p.153b).

Antoine appeared on the 1860 US census in Township 18, Range 5, Aroostook, Maine, as age 15, living with parents Antoine and Ortans Gagnon. (65) He appeared on the 1880 US census in Frenchville, Maine, as age 35, farmer, could read and write, born in Maine, living with wife Filimen and children Elise (age 11), Joseph (10), Lora (8), Maxime (5), Donat (4), and Mattiu (1). (66) He appeared on the 1900 US census in Frenchville, Maine, as born in Dec 1844 in Maine, age 55, married 32 years, farmer, could read, write and speak English, owned farm free of mortgage, farm schedule #116, living with wife Philomene and children Mattie (age 21), Marie (18), Antoine (15), Donat (24) and Donat's wife Marian (23) and son Albert (2 months).(67)

He died on 1 Mar 1920 in Frenchville, Maine.

Antoine GAGNON was married to Philomène MARQUIS (daughter of Joseph MARQUIS and Métaïde ALBERT) on 17 Feb 1868 in Ste-Luce church, Frenchville, Maine.(68)

Philomène MARQUIS was born on 14 May 1845 in New Brunswick, and was baptized at Ste Luce on the same day. She moved in 1868, at the time of her marriage, from New Brunswick to Maine.(69) She appeared on the 1880 US census in Frenchville, Maine as Filimen Gagnon, age 35, keeping house, could not read or write, born in Canada, living with husband Antoine and children Elise, Joseph, Lora, Maxime, Donat and Mattiu. (70) She appeared on the 1900 US census in Frenchville, Maine, as born May 1845 in Canada, age 55, mother of three children (clearly a mistake), all still alive, immigrated to the US in 1868, living in the US for 32 years, could read and write, did not know English, living with husband Antoine and children Mattie, Marie, Antoine, Donat and Donat's wife Marian and son Albert.(71)
