Explanation of columns:
Township Name: Name of townships listed in the 1850 Census, as written in the blank space after "Free Inhabitants of"
Reference number on microfilm: Numbers that are on the right-hand edge of the microfilm that indicate a place on the roll, not specific pages. Useful to find a specific place on the microfilm roll without having to use a microfilm viewer.
Page numbers (stamped): The front side of each page is stamped with a number in the upper right hand corner. The front side is side A, the back side is side B. These are the page numbers used in this transcription and in the published index to the 1850 census.
Page numbers (handwritten): Each page has a handwritten number, written when the pages were microfilmed, in the upper left or right hand corners. In this transcription this page number is put in parentheses at the top of each page after the date and name of the enumerator.
Number of families: The number of families counted in the census in each township.Aroostook County was divided for purposes of the 1850 census into three districts. The Southern Aroostook County census district was enumerated by Humphrey Chadbourn, a carpenter who lived in Molunkus Plantation. The Houlton district was enumerated by John F.H. Hall; Hall's entries are very detailed, and under place of birth he includes town or city as well as state. The Northern Aroostook County Census district was enumerated by Bradford Cummings.
